The debut of Professor Artel Great’s docu-series, How Disney Built America, aired Sunday (4/28) on the History Channel.

PERSPECTIVES ON PORTUGUESE ANIMATION

Assistant Professor Mihaela Mihailova contributed an essay on the work of directors David Doutel and Vasco Sá to a new bilingual volume on contemporary Portuguese animation, edited by award-winning director and educator Pedro Serrazina. The book is free to download (in English and Portuguese).

JOSEPH McBRIDE’S RECENT AUDIO COMMENTARIES

Professor Joseph McBride’s audio commentary on the 1948 Orson Welles film of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is being reissued on a new Kino Lorber Blu-ray edition on June 11. McBride, who has written three books on Welles, originally recorded that commentary for Olive Films in 2016. McBride also did a recent audio commentary for the Criterion Collection Blu-ray edition of Welles’s The Trial and acted for Welles from 1970 through 1976 as a film historian in The Other Side of the Wind (completed in 2018). McBride teaches courses on Welles at San Francisco State University.

BERKELEY ART MUSEUM PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE

SF State Cinema students screened short films at the Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive/BAMPFA, at the 2024 Student Committee Film Festival on April 5.

Graduate student, Flor Marmolejo’s experimental film “From Here” explores thoughts about belonging, cultural symbols, and personal loss.

BERKELEY ART MUSEUM PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE

SF State Cinema students screened short films at the Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive/BAMPFA, at the 2024 Student Committee Film Festival on April 5th.  

Undergraduate, Katarina Fink’s film “Gloaming” is a heartfelt animated poem about how two dying robots on the battlefield comfort each other in their final moments.

Animation Student, Kyle Johnson’s short film, “Shapeshifter,” is an official selection to screen later this year at the International Short Shot Film Festival in Moscow.
