Internships: Promotion, Distribution and Exhibition

The Roxie Theater and The Global Film Initiative offer several internships relating to prmotion, distribution, and exhibition.

Roxie Theater

The Roxie, San Francisco’s oldest and most revered non-profit film house, is looking for enthusiastic, energetic, dependable, and creative students who love film. We show the best, most controversial and most overlooked films of the past, present and future. The Roxie is located in the Mission District, at 16th Street & Valencia.

Dates and Hours

The Roxie has three internship positions available Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. A three-month commitment is required. Interns work 10 hours per week during our regular office hours, Monday through Friday, 10am to 5:30 pm. Schedule can be tailored to fit your class schedule. The Membership Internship requires attendance at some evening events.

Position Summaries

Benefits of all Roxie internships include free movies; free admission to all Roxie events, including the Winter Fundraiser (prior special guests include Amy Sedaris and John Waters); insider knowledge of the film exhibition industry; THREE UNITS OF ACADEMIC CREDIT; and working for the coolest cinema organization in the Bay Area.

Programming Intern (includes a small stipend!)

Responsibilities

Cataloging, organizing and creating a database of thirty-five years worth of printed calendars, as well as organizing and indexing several decades worth of exhibition materials (35mm, 16mm, 3/4 “ tape, DVD, etc.). The position would also assist in coordinating upcoming programs, from pre-screening films, to collecting and coordinating assets and film shipping, and everything in between.

Qualifications

We need a very detail-oriented cinephile! Basic familiarity with spreadsheets is a requirement, and any experience in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign or video editing is a plus.

Outreach Intern

Responsibilities

Tasks include distributing flyers; posting on social media outlets; emailing like-minded organizations of relevant events; updating databases; posting and arranging of ticket give-aways; assisting the Director of Publicity with mailing screeners; proofing releases; and conducting press screenings.

Additional Responsibilities

  • General office and administrative support (filing, errands, printing, mailings)
  • Archiving (organizing and digitizing Roxie Calendars from 1976 onward)
  • Winter Fundraiser (help with preparations for our December fundraiser)

Qualifications

Must be a reliable, detail-oriented, organized self-starter who loves film. Valid current drivers license preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office for Macs and PCs, familiarity with social media outlets and SF film culture and experience with PR or Marketing desirable.

Membership Intern

Responsibilities

Assisting the Membership Director; creating membership materials; updating databases; recruiting at busy events; planning for members events; securing community partners for membership perks.

The Global Film Initiative

The Global Film Initiative (GFI) promotes cross-cultural understanding through the medium of cinema by supporting the production and distribution of authentic and accessible stories from developing world. Every April, World Cinema Week brings our award-winning Global Lens narrative film series to students in classrooms all across the U.S. and Canada. GFI also hosts a free screening program for local high schools at our Ninth Street offices in San Francisco, in conjunction with World Cinema Week.

GFI interns gain hands-on, real-time experience. Each position offers a dynamic learning environment; volunteers are supervised by staff members and invited to participate in general operations as part of a holistic introduction to our nonprofit arts, education and independent world cinema mission.

Dates and Hours

Positions require a minimum commitment of 8 to 10 hours per week for 3 months, and can receive THREE UNITS OF ACADEMIC CREDIT. They can also be part of institutional professional development and training programs.

Film Acquisitions, Granting, and Distribution Internship

The Film Acquisitions, Granting and Distribution position provides an introduction to film acquisitions for Global Lens and the Initiative's annual granting cycles and philanthropy. This position is directly supervised by the Acquisitions and Granting Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Writing of film reviews and coverage
  • Grant evaluation`
  • Film festival research
  • Cataloguing
  • Pitching ideas and writing for institutional blog
  • Participation in acquisitions and granting meetings with Initiative staff

Education Marketing Intern

We're looking for someone with a stellar skill set that can bring our educational mission to the forefront of teachers' minds, lesson plans, and classrooms. If you demonstrate that you can write, sell, promote and have an interest in the education market, we want you on our team. This position is directly supervised by the Education & Public Programs Coordinator

Responsibilities

  • Assist in conceptualizing and executing pitches about World Cinema Week and GFI's educational film offerings &bull
  • Assist in managing the World Cinema Week application process
  • Assist in coordinating GFI's screening events during World Cinema Week
  • Pitch World Cinema Week to educators and education-allies • Create and edit teaching modules and other resources for GFI's educational films • Research potential education partners
  • Research and evaluate impact of World Cinema Week 2013
  • Pitch ideas and write arts, culture and education pieces for newsletter/blog.

Publicity and Marketing Intern

Are you excited and passionate about independent world cinema? Are you interested in learning about launching a film series and about what happens behind-the-scenes of a media nonprofit? The Publicity and Marketing intern position provides an introduction to all aspects of marketing and publicity for nonprofit film distribution, funding and education. Individuals with experience in design, Photoshop and/or blogging are highly encouraged to apply. This position receives direct supervision from the Communications Manager.

Blogging Internship

Are you excited and passionate about independent world cinema? Are you interested in learning about how blogging is used as a tool for the work of nonprofits? The Blogging Intern position provides an introduction to blog writing for nonprofit film distribution, funding and education. Individuals with experience in using WordPress or a similar CMS and writing compelling online copy under strict deadlines are strongly encouraged to apply. This position receives direct supervision from the Communications Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, researching and producing weekly content for our blog
  • Participating in meetings with staff about blog content and design
