MASTER ARTS (MA) IN CINEMa Studies

The MA in Cinema Studies is intended for individuals who wish to pursue research and writing in selected areas. A modest thesis project in the second year allows for focused research on a specific topic. Students also have the opportunity to organize a graduate student conference of their own devising and to serve as teaching assistants in a wide range of undergraduate courses.

The MA in Cinema Studies is designed to:

  1. Provide a foundation in film history, theory and criticism through a set of five required seminars
  2. Prepare students who wish to teach at the community college level
  3. Prepare students for further study at the Ph.D. level
  4. Provide advanced study prior to careers in fields such as journalism, distribution, exhibition, programming, and archiving.

Graduates have gone on to doctoral programs at UCLA, USC, University of Iowa, University of Chicago, University of Minnesota and elsewhere. Other graduates have pursued successful careers as curators and programmers, journalists and film critics, community college teachers and as authors. Some have taken up work in film archives and a number have returned to their native countries to pursue film careers outside the United States.
