The School of Cinema is delighted to welcome Professor Bakirathi Mani and Professor Patricia White, two brilliant scholars, to speak on issues of representing racialized communities in photography and in cinema.

Bakirathi Mani is Professor in the Department of English Literature and Coordinator of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at Swarthmore College. She is a scholar of Asian American Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and Transnational Feminist/Queer Studies, and is also a curator of South Asian diasporic visual cultures.
Patricia White is Professor and Chair of Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College. She is an interdisciplinary scholar, teacher, and advocate for feminist and queer film and media. With Timothy Corrigan, she co-wrote the widely adopted introductory film textbook The Film Experience.
They will discuss Professor Mani's new book UNSEEING EMPIRE: Photography, Representation, South Asian America (2020), relating those ideas to the work of cinema studies. Professor Elizabeth Ramierez-Soto (SFState University's Cinema) will be in conversation with the both of them.
