Department of Cinema seeks applicants for Assistant Professor position in Fiction Filmmaking and Queer Narrative, to start Fall 2014

The Cinema Department at San Francisco State University seeks candidates for a position in fiction filmmaking and queer narrative at the rank of Assistant (tenure-track) Professor, to begin in Fall 2014, subject to the University’s financial ability.

Qualifications
M.F.A., Ph.D., or equivalent degree and university teaching experience required; a commitment to liberal arts education within a professional program is also expected. The successful applicant will be an accomplished fiction filmmaker who is proficient in all areas of fiction filmmaking, with particular expertise in directing actors, queer narrative, queer theory, and visual style. Interest in screenwriting and pre-production desirable, as is the ability to teach film studies courses. Administrative experience in a university cinema production program is also highly desirable. The candidate should be poised to make innovative contributions to a department committed to creative expression, critical thinking, and social engagement.

Responsibilities, Areas of Specialization and Teaching Range
The candidate will teach courses in fiction filmmaking production and directing actors, as well as additional courses within his/her specialties, ranging from screenwriting and pre-production, to queer narrative and theory, with a normal course load of three courses per semester. The candidate must be adept at teaching in a dynamic interdisciplinary program that integrates filmmaking, the study of media and culture, animation, and screenwriting. Other duties include supervising MFA thesis projects and independent study projects, working with undergraduate students to help develop their projects, undergraduate major advising, curriculum development and other committee or service assignments, such as production coordinator.

Rank and Salary

The Department
The Cinema Department, housed in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts, has 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty and serves approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate students. We teach production and theory as a common enterprise and offer a B.A. in Cinema, M.A. in Cinema Studies, and M.F.A. in Cinema as well as an Animation Emphasis that is open to both cinema and non-cinema majors.
