SFMOMA Film Program features School of Cinema’s alumna Cauleen Smith

We are pleased to announce that on April 2nd SFMOMA begins a limited series Gathering Materials, which presents three distinct programs that focus on experimental moving image works and artist-made film and videos that use time and place as a guide to discover untold stories, forge connections across generations and geography, and map paths to ancestors and possible futures, if not utopias. The program is influenced and inspired by two exhibitions on view: the intimate portraiture and street photography of Dawoud Bey and the historical investigations of Cauleen Smith.

On May 21st, the Los Angeles–based artist and filmmaker Cauleen Smith will present the audiovisual performance Black Utopia LP: a cauleen smith movie (2012), which synthesizes her extensive research on Afrofuturism and the innovative American jazz composer and musician Sun Ra (1914–93). This program is free and open to the public, RSVP encouraged.
