RACE, SEX AND IDENTITY ONLINE: POP STARS OF COLOR

About the Course:

This upper-division undergraduate course focuses on the popular culture stardom of "pop stars of color." How do moving image representations enable cultural phenomena like Diana Ross, Rihanna, RuPaul, Selena, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Lee and Arnel Pineda and others to emerge and organize? We will study the role of social processes, communities and institutions that enable their authorship as stars, examine the spectatorship of and consumption by their audiences and conduct intertextual analysis, comparing them to other stars and productions so as to understand their historical contributions. Interdisciplinarity and intersectionality centrally inform our examination of the racial ethnic, class and gendered contexts of their existence and viability as stars. Most importantly, we will learn to read closely their performances and analyze their productions so as to understand their power and presence in popular culture.
