The Cinema Department at San Francisco State University seeks candidates for a one-year, full-time position in Latino/a Cinema at the rank of lecturer, to begin in Fall 2014, with the possibility of renewal after the first year. The position is contingent upon final funding approval.
Qualifications
Ph.D. and university teaching experience required; a commitment to liberal arts education within a professional program is also expected. Applicants poised to finish their doctoral degree by the end of 2014 will be considered. The successful applicant will be a scholar who specializes in Latin American and/or Latino/a cinema studies. We also encourage applicants with expertise in Lusophone-American film. All research specializations and geographical areas within these categories will be considered but we are particularly interested in candidates who can add an historical, fiction film, and popular visual culture orientation to our existing faculty research interests in documentary, experimental, and contemporary media arts. The candidate should be poised to make innovative contributions to a department committed to creative expression, critical thinking, and social engagement.
Responsibilities, Areas of Specialization and Teaching Range
The appointee will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in his or her area of specialty, as well as large lecture courses in cinema history and criticism. The appointee must be prepared to teach in a dynamic interdisciplinary program that integrates filmmaking, the study of media and culture, animation, and screenwriting. Other duties include supervising MA thesis projects and independent study projects, working with undergraduate students to help develop their research projects, and committee or service assignments. The appointee will teach three courses a semester.
Rank and Salary
The successful applicant will be appointed to the rank of Lecturer. Salary competitive, commensurate with qualifications. As part of the California State University system, SFSU provides generous health, retirement, and other benefits, including domestic partner benefits.
The Department
The Cinema Department, housed in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts, has 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty, two full-time lecturers, several part-time lecturers, and serves approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate students. We teach production and theory as a common enterprise and offer a B.A. in Cinema, M.A. in Cinema Studies, and M.F.A. in Cinema as well as an Animation Emphasis that is open to both cinema and non-cinema majors.
