SF State's 2013 International Documentary Film Workshop now accepting applications
Greta Snider and Weimin Zhang will host informational meeting about Shanghai program set for Thursday, April 4, 12:30-2pm in FA 344B.
The International Documentary Workshop is the first bilateral exchange program established between SFSU and China. The workshop will be conducted in Shanghai, China, one of the fastest growing metropolitans in the world.
This cross-cultural program was created and directed by Prof. Weimin Zhang in summer 2010. The uniqueness of this program is that it emphasizes REAL cross-cultural experience and community team collaboration, providing a unique opportunity to explore, participate and experience a different culture and a political/economical environment through the medium of documentary filmmaking.
Each summer, twelve (12) students from SFSU including both undergraduate senior students and graduate students, work with twelve students from Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) in a four-week intensive workshop (this year from from June 24 to July 19). After in-depth research and pitches, four film projects are selected and students are divided into 4 groups. Each group consists of 6 students: 3 SFSU students and 3 students of SHNU. They work extremely hard and, by the end of the session, successfully present four high quality short documentary films in Chinese/English. Each year, films from the workshop have been selected for screenings at film festivals, including MADE IN CHINA, (2011 San Francisco Int'l Asian American Film Festival), BEI YAO WAN, (SFAAIFF 2012, and Cannes Film Festival), and BANZAI RISING (CAAM, 2013).
Workshop duration: June 24 - July 19, 2013 Tuition and fees: SFSU students are required to pay the regular SFSU tuition to take this workshop (6 credit units). SFSU students pay for round-trip airfare (up to$1200) and personal expenses while in China. The program will provide housing and partial local transportation during the session.
