By now, most of us are quite aware of the increasingly large scale weather abnormalities such as supersize storms or droughts that have caused unprecedented life casualties and infra-structure damages both in the U.S. and in many parts of the world. In the field of cinema studies, issues of environment and climate change have not been seriously explored in a systematic way. This course will begin to do just that. Both documentary and fictional films will be studied for their reflection on the relationship between humans and nature and how audience’s awareness about nature is being shaped (or mis-shaped) by cinema.
