Biography

Karly Stark (they/them) is an experimental filmmaker, lecturer, and preservationist based in Oakland, CA. They hold a BA in Film Studies from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Cinema from San Francisco State University. As a lecturer, Karly passionately and intentionally grounds their courses in Experimental Filmmaking practices (especially Essay Filmmaking) and Queer/Trans film topics and theory. Karly also works at UC Berkeley in the Media Resources Center, where they digitize and preserve film and media materials for accessible educational use and research. Karly's creative work incorporates lyrical, essay, and diary forms to explore human experience and memory through a queer lens, and their films have screened widely and internationally at such venues as the Pacific Film Archive, British Film Institute, SFMOMA, MixNYC, and McEvoy Foundation for the Arts.
